There’s something about May that feels like opening a window you forgot was there.
The breeze carries a bit of salt, a bit of pollen, and — if you’re lucky — the smell of someone else’s barbecue. The town starts to hum again. Sailboats get dusted off. The market in Lunenburg returns to the arena. Teenagers start wearing shorts on 9°C days.
As for me, I’ve swapped out my heavy coat for a jacket that’s definitely not warm enough but feels emotionally correct for the season. The sun is up earlier, and so am I — sort of. It’s the time of year when you start saying yes to things again, and suddenly your weekends are full of possibility, potlucks, and plans made in line at the coffee shop.
This issue of the Barnacle celebrates that spring momentum. We’re spotlighting folks who are getting things growing — in gardens, in community spaces, in creative projects. There’s a sense that the town is stretching, waking up a little more each day.
And as always, we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re planting your first peas or organizing a local event, this paper exists to help our readers feel a little more connected to the place we share.
Here’s to May — to muddy boots, longer evenings, and something new taking root.
