Shipping News: Winter Work and Workshops

Bluenose II pulled their bowsprit in early October after noticing signs of wear on the 30-year-old spar. A bowsprit is a spar that extends forward from the bow of a sailing vessel. Old Town Boatworks is building a new one at their boat shop on the Lunenburg waterfront. 

HMCS Oriole, the sail training vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy, is docked at the Old Foundry Marina at the Lunenburg Shipyard for a winter refit. Ironbound Rigging recently removed the masts, stripped them, and stored them indoors in preparation for extensive varnish work over the winter.

Theresa E. Connor also had her masts pulled by Ironbound Rigging last month. The last of the saltbank schooners, the 1938 museum vessel was drydocked at the Lunenburg Shipyard in February for a full assessment.

The Big Boat Shed had a great turnout for their two-day Material Matters Workshop in late October. Hosts and guests showcased “hands-on demonstrations of new and traditional materials in marine and heritage carpentry fields.”

Museum vessel Cape Sable is back at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic wharf with a fresh paint job. 

On October 6, cruise ship Viking Octantis moored in the Lunenburg Bay, en route to Valparaiso, Chile. Just three weeks after their visit to Lunenburg, they were already off the coast of Chile!

SailGP is returning to Halifax on June 20 – 21, 2026, with tickets going on sale to the general public on November 13. SailGP is a high-speed, international sailing championship featuring national teams racing F50 foiling catamarans in iconic harbours around the world.
