Elizabeth’s Books, in the heart of the Town of Lunenburg’s bookselling district, boasts a rental library of more than five thousand DVDs. The shop usually opens around 6 p.m. each evening, never closing earlier than 10 p.m. Each month, proprietor Chris Webb recommends films for your consideration.
“September is Michael Caine Month,” says Chris.
Born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, Sir Michael Caine has appeared in more than 160 films, including September’s top picks:
Zulu (1964)
The Eagle Has Landed (1976)
Harry Brown (2009)
Little Voice (1998)
In 1998’s “Little Voice”, Caine plays Ray Say, a manipulative impresario who persuades gifted undiscovered singer Laura Hoff (Jane Horrocks) to perform in a nightclub.
Hoff’s signature talent is the uncanny vocal imitation of famed chanteuses including Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe.
On May 19, 1962, at then-President of the USA John F. Kennedy’s birthday party, Monroe famously sang a rendition of “Happy Birthday” Kennedy described as “sweet and wholesome.”
It’s rumoured that in the 1930s, during America’s prohibition period, Kennedy’s father Joseph Kennedy was a frequent visitor to the Lunenburg Inn on Dufferin Street.
Alfie (1966)
