A new Nova Scotia Loyal voucher program might make shopping this holiday season a little easier. Three great local bookstores are participating in a pilot program offering a $10 voucher for Nova Scotian-authored and published book titles.
Block Shop Books, Lunenburg Bound Books, and Good Dog Books all feature some of the over 1,600 eligible books, making gift-giving a breeze this month. We chatted with Mads Higgins, co-owner of Good Dog Books, to ask what books they would use with their voucher.
Here are their three picks:
- Milktooth by Jamie Burnet. A powerful work of contemporary literary fiction set in Cape Breton and Scotland exploring the clandestinity of queer abuse
- Fives Seasons of Charlie Francis by Danica Roache. A bold, refreshing, and darkly funny debut novel about a mixed-ancestry Mi’kmaw woman balancing academia, grief, love, and new motherhood, for fans of Fleabag and Amanda Peters.
- LaHave Bakery by Jane Morrigan, Susan Ivory. An oral history of one of the cultural icons of Nova Scotia’s South Shore, featuring photographs, illustrations, and recipes.
Vouchers are valid until February 28, 2026 and only work at certain independent bookstores. Go out and support local!
