Coastal Action turns 30! This year we celebrate a significant milestone-30 years of commitment to protecting our local environment and fostering a culture of sustainability throughout South Shore Nova Scotia and beyond!
Based in Mahone Bay, Coastal Action is a non-profit environmental group dedicated to protecting and restoring our environment through research, education, action and community engagement.
Originally named the “Bluenose Atlantic Coastal Action Program”, we became a registered charity on December 29, 1993, with the mission to address the lack of sewage treatment in the Town of Lunenburg. Our name later changed to “Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation”, but we are better known to our friends and community as Coastal Action!
Over the past 30 years, we have grown from a small team to now over 40 staff during peak field season, managing more than 30 active projects at any given time. Coastal Action has transformed into a broad-ranging organization with cross-disciplinary programs working on climate change, water quality, species at risk, coastal and marine habitats and environmental education.
You’ll find us working across all ecosystems —from freshwater streams to saltwater bays, forests to ocean floors—where we restore habitats, monitor environmental health, and keep natural spaces thriving. We’re committed to conserving endangered species unique to our region and addressing threats from invasive species. We bring environmental education to classrooms and get youth outside, fostering lasting connections with nature and inspiring future advocates. We are also taking action to help our communities adapt to climate change by installing nature-based infrastructure while also equipping our communities with the knowledge they need.
Whether you’ve been with us from the start or are just discovering us, we’re thrilled to have you in our community! To learn more about our projects and how we’re celebrating 30 years, visit www.coastalaction.org to connect with us!
