Lunenburg Shipping News: Canoes, Cruise Ships, and Cape Horn Adventures

It’s a season of transition in the Lunenburg County boating world. Many vessels are either heading south to warmer weather, being hauled out for their winter rest, or in drydock for inspections and refits. 

As the tourism season winds down, two of Lunenburg’s public sailing vessels were hauled out at the Lunenburg Shipyard. Sailing vessel Eastern Star was in drydock and launched again late last month. Bluenose II was hauled out for regular scheduled maintenance and inspection, and is expected to be back in the water later this month or early December. On Nov. 2, Mi’kmaq Elder Todd Labrador launched a beautiful birchbark canoe alongside a crowd of excited onlookers at Miller Point Peace Park in Bridgewater. Built by hand at the DesBrisay museum, this 16-foot L’nu Lake canoe is now for sale. Interested people or organizations can contact Todd at toddlabrador777@outlook.com for more information. 

Spirit of Bermuda was in town getting refit at the Lunenburg Shipyard. They safely made it back to Bermuda and a few locals even helped make the trip, including Paul Bracken as captain. 

World-traveling tall ship Picton Castle has announced their next voyage to Tahiti, the South Seas, and around the legendary Cape Horn  between April 2025 and May 2026. For information on how to get on board, visit their website: picton-castle.com

Last month, Lunenburg saw a few cruise ships anchor in the Lunenburg Bay. French cruise ship Le Bellot was in town at the end of the month. Viking Polaris came to town on Oct. 15 and Viking Octantis visited on Oct. 17, each giving more than 375 passengers the chance to explore our charming town.
