The Lunenburg County Community Health Board (LCCHB) is seeking new members who are eager to improve the health and wellness of their community. LCCHB is one of 35 community health boards in the province. The members of these boards are your neighbours who provide a voice for the health and wellness needs of their communities by working with Nova Scotia Health, IWK Health Centre, and community groups, as part of their mandate under section 62 of the Health Authorities Act. The Western zone boards launched their new health plan at the end of January. Over the next four years the LCCHB will be prioritizing access to basic needs, mental health, community and natural environments as focus for their work. This mandate is broad to emphasize cooperation and connection, and represents new possibilities for the work the LCCHB can do.
The LCCHB connects with the community day to day and through outreach work with local partners like South Shores Open Doors Association (SSODA) to listen to the lived experiences of community members on important issues like housing and food insecurity. These stories have informed the new health plan, which is presented in turn to Nova Scotia Health and policymakers at all levels of government as a part of the board’s work.
The board meets monthly to discuss initiatives and to learn from speakers working to improve different social determinants of health in Lunenburg County. If you are passionate about making change in your community, want to deepen your own community connections, or have any questions about the community health board please reach out to our coordinator Lisa at Lisa.Pomfrey-Talbot@nshealth.ca
