Saltwater Stillness is a weekly drop of mindfulness, Maritime-style. Each column shares a simple way to steady the mind and bring a bit of calm to the day—no yoga mat required.
Every Maritimer knows the weather has a mind of its own. One day it’s blue sky and sunshine, the next a nor’easter blows through and you can’t see your neighbour’s house. Our moods can change just as quickly.
When the inner weather turns stormy, try this grounding exercise. Look around and quietly name five things you can see, four things you can hear, three things you can feel, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.
It doesn’t take long—maybe a minute. But it pulls you out of the storm in your head and back into the here and now.
The weather outside still does what it wants, and so do our thoughts and moods. But just like hauling in the clothesline before the wind picks up, a little preparation helps us ride things out.
