Saltwater Stillness: a monthly drop of mindfulness, Maritime-style. Sharing simple ways to steady the mind and bring a bit of calm to the day – no yoga mat required.
Tide to Your Breath
Most, if not all of us, have sat by the water in Lunenburg County watching the tide roll in and out, and know there’s a rhythm to the ocean. Our minds have a rhythm too, though sometimes it feels more like a squall than a calm swell.
A simple way to steady things is to line your breath up with the tide. Inhale and imagine the water moving toward the shore. Exhale and picture it slipping back out to sea.
Try this for just a minute or two — no special cushion or incense required. You can do it waiting for your coffee at No 9 or standing on the wharf. The trick isn’t to stop your thoughts, but to let them drift in and out with your breath, like the tide itself.
Over time, you may find yourself carrying that same harbour calm into the rest of your day, even when life feels more like a nor’easter than a picnic by the shore.
