This story originally incorrectly identified a donor to Alison Strachan’s campaign as a teacher, It has also been updated to note that Jo-Ann Ramsey is the previous owner of Jo-Ann’s Deli Market & Bake Shop.
Under the Municipal Elections Act election candidates are required to report the campaign contributions that they receive. The Barnacle reached out to the local municipalities to share the lists of reported donations over $50.
In the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL), Elspeth McLean-Wile’s mayoral campaign reported raising $29,350 in cash donations. That amount increases to $30,636 total if you include in-kind donations.
The mayor’s reported donations represent just over half (56.2 per cent) of all donations made during the 2024 municipal elections for Bridgewater, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and other candidates in MODL. The Barnacle reached out to the District of Chester to obtain campaign disclosure reports, but did not receive them by the time of publication.
Most of Mayor McLean-Wile’s donations were local. Just under two-thirds (65.5 per cent) came from donors within the municipality.
The mayor received most of her support from business interests who contributed a combined $14,900 (51 per cent) in cash donations. That value increases to $16,185 (53 per cent) if you include a $1,285 in-kind donation from the owner of Spitfire Signs. Business ownership for this analysis was identified to the best of our ability through online searches of people and companies listed in disclosure reports.
The largest sector represented in the mayor’s donations are development, real estate, and building supplies, accounting for 39.7 per cent ($11,650) of cash donations. Town and County Property Improvements and the spouse of the company’s recently deceased owner donated a combined $10,000, which accounts for 34 per cent of all the cash donations she received. Other donors in the sector include: Michael Kontak of The Shaw Group ($750), South Shore Ready Mix Ltd. ($500), Gigi Turner connected to Turner & Turner Lumber Limited ($300), and Realtor Karsa Melnick ($100).
Food and hospitality-affiliated donations came in second, representing 8.6 per cent ($2,600) of cash donations. These donations include: Jo-Ann Ramsey, the previous Owner of Jo-Ann’s Deli Market and Bake Shop in Mahone Bay ($1,000), Mark Eisner of Atlantic Beef Products Inc, Armstrong Food Service, and High Liner Foods ($500), Bridgewater Best Western ($500), Dale Kelly President and CEO of 101141997 Saskatchewan Ltd. ($500), and Steven Saunders the Director of Regulatory and Technical Services at High Liner Foods Inc. ($100).
Finance was the third largest sector represented in her donations, representing $1,300 (4.4 per cent) of cash donations, from: Michelle Crouse of BMO Nesbitt Burns ($500), Greg Flynn of CIBC Wood Gundy ($500), Danny Carey’s Insurance Agency ($200), and David M Jordan of Manulife. The automotive sector came in close behind at $1,200 (4 per cent), which included donations from: GW Mosher Holdings Ltd. ($500), Saunders Motors ($300), Ian and Daphne Tufts of Ian’s Automotive ($200).
Lunenburg Mayor Myra Also Raised Large Sum, Supported by Business Interests
Lunenburg Mayor Jamie Myra reported raising $9,550 in cash donations, $9,825 if you include in-kind donations. This total accounts for almost two-thirds (63.2 per cent) of all donations for the 2024 election in the Town of Lunenburg.
Donations to Myra came significantly from local business interests. Just under half ($4,897, 49.8 per cent) of his reported donations came for either a local business or a business owner in Lunenburg County.
Myra’s business donations came primarily from companies or individuals involved in the real estate and development sector (17.3 per cent, $1,700), which includes a $1,000 donation from former Conserative-turned-Liberal politician and national finance personality Garth Turner. Hospitality and recreation sector interests account for 11.7 per cent ($1,150) of Myra’s reported donations. Business interests in the fisheries sector account for a similar 10.9 per cent ($1,075).

Re: Mayor McLean-Wile Raised Substantial Sum Through Donations in 2024 Election, Mostly From Business Interests by Christy Kelly-Bisson (and the piece on solar projects)
Christy – A very interesting and detailed piece on municipal re MODL politics. As you would expect many of the donors are Liberals with connections to Elspeth and other Liberals. I wonder if most of Carolyn Bolivar Getson’s donations would be Conservative leaning.
In about 2005 I spoke against MODL changing to a mayor system for some of the reasons your reporting highlights.
Can you contact me privately.
Thanks
Frank
I do question the reasoning behind Jesse Ward, Editor-in-Chief “Emeritus” inclusion of information on donors. In my case, I donated $200 to Jamie Myra’s campaign. Weirdly, my employment status (retired translator, true story), formerly with 723186 Alberta Ltd. (I wasn’t “with” the company, it was a company I incorporated in 1995 and dissolved in 2018, and was listed in Alberta and on the NS Registry of Joint Stocks, given that I operated the company in NS as of 2007), and a link to my now defunct Linked In account is deemed worthwhile information, unless it is included solely to imply that Barnacle staff are “investigative” journalists.
