A Wink and a Nod

March is often the hardest transitional month, bearing its name from the Roman god of war, Martius, and ruled by the hyper-masculine ambitions of the planet Mars.

Traditional associations describe immense power, defying odds and crumbling dynasties. It is the violence of spring; we are drumming up something (heat) from nothing (sleep) to bring ourselves back to life.

March starts a cycle of change, and responds to the call of restored balance – and every new cycle is a chance to bridge the gap between us and them; a chance to examine how we transition from place to place both literally and spiritually.

With that in mind, I like to think that exploring astrology is less about knowing what is coming and more about learning from the past.

Connection is the key to all things and every connection requires some form of communication to succeed, whether positively or not.

Perhaps Pisces season can practice a bit more trust and Aries can meet them with more self-regulated slowness to usher in a harmonious metamorphosis that leaves both sides satisfied.

If we are hoping to repeat the cycle we’ve always had, we can choose to march (pardon the pun) with blind, militant determination into the warm, sun-kissed embrace of late spring.

We can pull the wool sweater over our eyes and ignore the dirty snow until the first glimpse of a crocus. (Honestly, you can absolutely do that, still a very valid and functional way to get through.)

But I wonder, if communication is the key to connection – and let’s say you want to have as many positive connections as possible – maybe the transition from winter to spring itself needs a fresh approach.

In fact, what if the God of war in all of us just needs to be a better leader.

An effective general is an effective communicator, so let’s ask ourselves how we really want to feel and see if we can’t summon the courage to try something new to get there. Even if it means laying on the floor in a different spot than you’re used to, or making a cup of hot milk and honey before bed.

Do we absolutely have to thrash and fight for freedom from the silvery winter? Or can we just let out a big, horse-lipped exhale, take a walk, share a thought, and ask a question?

What did you like about February (haha)? What did you leave behind? What would you do again? What wouldn’t you do again? My inner voice tells me that the so-called God of war does not have to be particularly cold or harsh. They can be a peaceful God. If we want it.

I invite all who are lucky enough to have them, to open the windows and doors of your dwellings the next time the sun is out and the air is crisp. Let the cold breeze shake off heavy wood stovedust and show you that all becomes clear, eventually.

Aries – Stay with me: Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44BC for which Shakespeare coined the phrase “beware the Ides of March” in his infamous play as a warning to Caesar the night before his death. Fast forward to 2025, we will witness a lunar eclipse on March 14th. Is it so much of a stretch to see this eclipse as a way to check in with our own power and how it affects those around us? This could be a good time to assess our core values, line our actions up with our integrity and possibly catch a problem before it becomes one.

Taurus – The anxiety of leaving a nice warm bed is enough to summon inertia, I know, but your inner voice is particularly apt at seeking pleasure and you may just need to expand your list of pleasurable things. A really good pair of socks to wear around the house while the floors are still cold can be nice. Putting a pillow behind your back can level up any sitting experience. Small changes can sometimes spark the best internal monologues.

Gemini – All this talk about communication and connection, it may seem obvious that it would be your time to shine but I think this season is better spent working on a complicated puzzle or reading about gardening. Grounding your productive and curious tendencies now will help you stay on or close to the ground when the spring fever hits.

Cancer – Grab a toilet paper tube or make a telescope with your hand. Look at anything, wherever you are and consider it as a composition of light, shape, shadow and line. With some focused attention we can describe even the most mundane corners of our life with artful passion, comedy and empathy.

Leo – Harness your clairvoyance this month just as I described earlier by learning from the past. When did your instincts serve you well? When did you wish you had listened? You are full of wisdom.

Virgo – You could also gain trust in yourself as the seasons change by viewing your surroundings as compositions (re: Cancer horoscope). Pause any nagging feelings of possessive control by marveling at how light can bounce off of clothes piled on a chair. When the clothes are washed, folded and put away we can see how the light bounces off empty space left behind. Romanticizing (rather than analyzing) is good practice during times of instability and growth.

Libra – By my calculations, any Libra who’s up for partying (goofin’, laughin’, freak flag stuff) right now should go for it. Someone’s gotta do it. Especially if it strengthens your relationships with trusted, close friends.

Scorpio – Do young folks “not want to work anymore” or is there a misunderstanding going on? When we look at history to explore the events of today, we constantly repeat ourselves when we interact with different generations. If an opportunity comes up to spend time or do any activity with another age bracket, take it and make careful observation of any age-based bias you might have. This is also a good time for you to marvel at nature, specifically.

Sagittarius – What are you interested in? What can you do with relative ease and enjoy for the most amount of time? What challenges you in a fun way? What feeds you in a positive way? Now ask yourself if you deem those things important. Spoiler alert: they are!

Capricorn – If you have spare time and are experiencing boredom, take opportunities to volunteer, especially by making food or shelter. If you have no spare time and are experiencing boredom, reflect on your relationship with anger and impatience by putting a chair outside at the first sign of spring and sitting there for an unmeasured amount of time. Feel the breach of inaction on your body and see what comes up.

Aquarius – A name derived from “cup-carrier”, Aquarius carries water. Heavy, unpredictable and relentlessly assertive, water is a tough load to bear. Cry, my friend. Even if you’ve already been crying for sometime, keep crying with joy and sadness and know it’s okay to share the burden.

Pisces – Your constellation takes up a lot of space in the sky, did you know? Two large fish connected by their tails or two fishing lines depending on how you feel about it. A person born under the Pisces sign always needs to be aware of how much space their emotions require. Your relationships depend on it, your soul depends on it. Avoid loneliness by reminding yourself to check on your friends and family as a means to learn how to love them best.
