Five Fall Outings on the South Shore

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood

And sorry I could not travel both.

So begins Robert Frost’s famous poem, “The Road Not Taken.” But Lunenburg County residents eager to plan a fall adventure need not fear; they can travel both those roads this autumn, and much more beyond that.

1. Hands-On History at Ross Farm Museum

Our journey begins in the heart of New Ross, where adventurers will find themselves taking in the scenic sights of Ross Farm. Visitors can strike up conversation with museum employees in historic costumes who are knowledgeable about the farm’s history. If the educational aspect doesn’t appeal, then the sheer coziness and autumnal spirit of visiting a traditional farm and appreciating adorable farm animals might draw you in.

Coffee break: Follow up your visit with a cuppa joe and some hashbrowns at Vittles Cafe in New Ross.

2. Creepy Critters at Cosby’s Garden Centre

Daytrippers with wanderlust in their hearts can take Highway 103 to Liverpool, where they’ll be enchanted by the strange and wonderful concrete creations in the Cosby’s Garden Centre statue garden. Artist Ivan Higgins has filled a small forest with dozens of fantasy-inspired sculptures. You’ll encounter everything from dragons to trolls to impish creatures. The statue garden is an excellent place to take a slow walk and snap plenty of photos.

Coffee break: Finish off the outing with a sweet indulgence from Five Girls Baking in downtown Liverpool.

3. Autumn Foliage at the MARC

Leaf-peepers are encouraged to stop by Bridgewater’s gorgeous MARC trails. The trails are sure to be strewn with fallen leaves, creating a perfect autumn picture. For those who need a little more excitement than a pile of leaves, there will be a historic 1800s-style campfire as well as a family Halloween party at the MARC in the final two weeks of October.

☕Coffee break: After breathing in the forest air, weary travelers can make a stop at Fancy Pants Cafe in Bridgewater for a latte and a well-earned cookie.

4. Social Time at the Library (Shhh!)

South Shore Libraries is hosting a variety of exciting events this fall. On a chilly autumn morning or a rainy afternoon, make your way to the library for a Halloween crafting workshop, a writer’s group, or a lesson about trees! All the workshops are free, and most are kid-friendly.

☕Coffee break: Lunenburg Library visitors can stroll down to Dory Mates Seafood Shop with their library books for a cup of tea and a freshly-made sandwich.

5. Popcorn and a Film at Chester Playhouse

Autumn often brings stormy days. Don’t let the rain and wind spoil your adventure! Chester Playhouse will screen films such as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Bookworm this fall. Grab your complimentary popcorn, slide into a comfy theatre seat, and lose yourself in a movie while waiting out the rain.

☕Coffee break: Treat yourself to a warm drink and a snack at Kiwi Cafe, right across the street from the Playhouse!
