Adviceburg: Adapting to Change

Dear Anne,

How should we handle major change and transition? Why is it so hard to deal with things ending and what can we do to work through it?

Barnacle Staff & Readers

Dear Barnacle Staff and Readers,

A mentor of mine once said, “Change is Hard.” Such a simple phrase, but oh, so true. Even if the change is a good one, adjusting to the new normal is hard. Change forces us to create new routines.

For those of us who waited for The Barnacle to come out each month so we could savour the articles or complete the crossword over a coffee at No 9, looking for that new routine will be a challenge. Independent journalism is not a dime a dozen in Lunenburg County, and The Barnacle offered a fresh, unadorned perspective, with a sense of humour and quirky quizzes to offset the more serious reporting.

For the staff, The Barnacle created community and friendship. The sharing of ideas, brainstorming, and just time together each month — that camaraderie will be missed.

The Barnacle closing down is certainly a loss. Many will wonder how we will get such thorough reporting in the future. Some may feel disappointment or anger. The way through this is to realize we don’t have control over this change. Lives transition and that transition can impact commitments and responsibilities. This doesn’t mean there are no opportunities to have other platforms that address similar interests, and we can all hope someone will decide to fill the void.

It’s important to look at the positive. The Barnacle provided so much to our community. We were lucky to have them, and they trained us to look beyond the standard message given by our community through traditional media. We learned to openly question. What more could we ask?

Anne
