In the first couple of weeks of May, the South Shore Refugee Project held its third Kitchen Party, Spring Basket Raffle, and Bake Sale. The family we are attempting to bring to a new home here are currently living temporarily in Lebanon. As we work toward bringing that family of five Syrian Refugees with three young children to the security and safety of the South Shore, we were reminded of what a wonderful, generous, and kind region we are so fortunate to live in. So many businesses and merchants donated lovely objects, food, gift cards, and funds to help people they never met. So many generously bought Raffle tickets! People donated time to organize and prepare food. A fabulous group of local musicians came and provided superb entertainment. Parishioners of Saint John the Apostle Parish in Bridgewater and Lunenburg baked and made us envious of their cooking abilities.
The music was great, the fish, corn chowder, and desserts superb. Gar MacDonald and his wife, Tara Webb, won the 50/50 draw and donated it back to the cause. Kathleen Ferrier and Cynthia Clark won the marvellous raffle baskets. We raised over $3,250 and are now almost 85% of the way to reach the goal of $60,000 needed to achieve our sponsorship goal. In an increasingly challenged world, where hate and division make the news so often, the people of Bridgewater, MODL, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay reminded us that people are good and kind and want to take care of those around them and even those far away, who we wait to welcome.
