Planting Trees to Thrive: Tiny Wabanaki Forest
October 21, 2023 @ 9:00 am
“This is a FREE permaculture workshop. 12 – 24 people needed. Pre-registration required on Eventbrite. Learn the “bowl and berm” method to plant trees in poor soil AND help us plant phase 2 of the food forest: the tiny Wabanaki forest! In the Spring of 2023, Rosmarie Lohnes of Helping Nature Heal taught 24 friends of the food forest a “bowl and berm” method for planting trees so that they have the best chance of thriving. Now we will build on our community learning to plant the next phase of our food forest: a tiny Wabanaki forest. In this workshop you will learn how to make use of woody and local organic material to stimulate root growth in the mycorrhizal layer. This is a hands-on, heavy work experience suitable for fit adults and mature teens. You will be amending approximately 15 large holes (pre-dug) and 20 smaller holes with organic material and nutrients. You will be shoveling, wheelbarrowing, planting heavy trees, and watering. Dress for the weather: work boots, work clothes and gloves. Bring: drinking water/beverage; a snack will be provided. If you have it: a shovel. We also need a few more wheelbarrows.”
