Dog walkers and market goers woke up to a shocking surprise in Lunenburg Thursday morning, finding Jamie Myra’s election signage defaced with googly eyes.
Several election signs with Myra’s face were covered with large googly eyes sometime between Sept 18 and Sept 19. The vandals targeted signage around town, including on Pelham St and at the corner of Green St and Victoria Rd.
Myra is taking the act in stride. In an email comment about the situation, Myra writes,
The Myra 4 Mayor team is continuing to run a professional, respectful campaign and will not be shaken off course with some of the foolishness that seems to be happening at this time in the campaign. We kindly ask everyone to respect and appreciate all candidates signs and the property owners yards. We strive to connect our community, not be divisive and hurtful. Allow the Democratic process to play out at the polls on election day.
When asked for comment, opponent Jesse Ward stated, “I disavow all forms of vandalism.”
Temporary signage is addressed under the Land-Use Bylaw but does not include regulations for defacing signage.
Municipal Clerk Kayla Byrne states in an email the course of action, should someone want to report vandalism. The town would collect, “the name of the complainant, address, contact info, as well as the location where the signage was vandalized and if they have any additional comments/details.”
Byrne also shared in the email that in the event of repeated or targeted acts of vandalism, it may constitute mischief and could be reported to the RCMP.
As of Sept 19, the town has not received any official reports of vandalized signs.
