SUMMARY:Chester Playhouse presents Ben Caplan in concert
DESCRIPTION:Nova Scotia’s folk legend\, Ben Caplan\, brings a night of incredible music\, magical storytelling\, and powerful performance as his trio makes its first visit to the rebuilt Chester Playhouse. \n\n\n\nBen Caplan is both the roar of the hurricane and the eye of the storm. He has an uncanny ability to channel both wild abandon and quiet introspection. His songwriting pulls from many diverse influences\, but both his music and his lyrics regularly draw from his Jewish heritage. Often mixing biblical imagery and klezmer inflected melodies\, Caplan re-appropriates ancient sounds and themes with a decidedly contemporary twist. \n\n\n\nBen released his first studio album in 2011\, and has spent the last ten years recording music and performing to ever-growing audiences in music clubs and theatres around the world.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Where Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:The South Shore Chapter of the Council of Canadians and South Shore Ceasefire Now will host a film screening of Where Olive Trees Weep. \nThis documentary film gives background to the current crisis and brings to light the stories of the people that the filmmakers met in their 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. It offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. It features Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. There is also footage of Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons. \nThe film is a call for the end to the occupation in Palestine\, equal rights and fair treatment for Palestinian people\, and the spreading of healing for all intergenerational cycles of trauma in the region. \nPlease join us Sunday\, February 9th at 2:00pm (snow date February 16th). Following the film\, there will be an opportunity to learn about the work that both organizations are doing\, hear about future plans\, explore ways to take action\, and gather with others for sharing and conversation. Light refreshments will be available. All are welcome. Admission is free\, but we welcome donations. Any money collected beyond our expenses will be sent to an aid organization\, selected by South Shore Ceasefire Now.

SUMMARY:The First Jew in Canada - A Trans Tale
DESCRIPTION:Sat\, Mar 1 • 8:00 pm – Doors at 7:30\n$25\nTickets online or at Rose Bay Bistro\n\nThe First Jew in Canada: A Trans Tale is a wild journey in story\, crossing oceans\, religions\, genders\, and centuries\, mapping the life of Jacques LaFargue – the trans Jewish 18th century historical figure whose very existence challenges current perceptions of transgender history and identity.\n\nThrough the lens of nine verifiable facts\, this show begins with the historical records of Jacques LaFargue and overlays the personal narrative of narrator S. Bear Bergman\, a Jewish transgender man whose modern life mirrors Jacques’s in startling\, hilarious\, exhausting and illuminating ways. From daring adventure to startling truth\, each fact becomes a gateway to exploring broader themes of identity\, history\, and the desire to be seen.

SUMMARY:Love Boat (Amanda Rhodenizer) Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:In the early 1980s\, HMCS Cormorant became the first vessel in the Canadian Navy to board a mixed gender crew. This historic first was tarnished by the rampant sexual harassment and misogyny that occurred on board\, earning it the nickname “The Love Boat” among sailors. \n\nAfter a long career as a diving support vessel for the Canadian Navy\, HMCS Cormorant was decommissioned and abandoned at a dock in Bridgewater\, Nova Scotia where it languished for over 20 years. During that time the ship was neglected and eventually became an environmental hazard\, with reports of toxic waste accumulating in its fuel cells. \n\nAfter years of public pressure\, the Cormorant was finally towed away for scrapping in 2020. \n\nIn a province where gender-based violence is on the rise\, HMCS Cormorant is a reminder of the visible and invisible tolls of trauma. The works presented in “Love Boat” map the Cormorant’s last resting place on the LaHave River: panoramic paintings include physical changes to the dock that took place during the ship’s stay\, a scale boat model displays breaches along the ship’s hull\, and a plywood decoy of a shag bears witness to it all. \n\nThank you to Arts Nova Scotia for their generous support of this project.

How does one begin to greet the ending of a winters slumber and welcome in the budding spring? What does it feel like to sip in the vitality of the promise of the seasons change? How do you awaken to arise?✨\nAs we move within the theme of Awaken to Arise\, with promises of Spring on its way… Luna will open the space with a gentle grounding circle\, invitation into the prompts and then invite you to be guided into your body through somatics. The journey will then transition in to a free movement space and close with grounding and optional reflection.\nNo previous dance or ecstatic dance necessary\, bring a friend or loved one\, your comfy dancing clothes\, a water bottle and come as you. All of you is welcome.\n*** Pre-Registration is required through event link ! Limited spaces available.\nExchange is offered on sliding scale for accessibility.\nEcstatic Dance is a form of free movement with the intention to drop deeper into the body through allowing intuitive movement in a non-judgmental space. It is a journey from the ground and slowness to full expression\, free flowing movement\, by following the wisdom of the body. These journeys are led by a guide who invites you into presence with your body through movement\, then transitioning into a free form expression of dance & you complete your journey with coming back to intentional rest and stillness. Throughout the journey you can experience a form of meditation through deep presence or a trance- like\, potentially ecstatic \, state through following your own internal rhythm.\nRenditions of an Ecstatic Dance are an opportunity to move intentionally without distractions. The invitation is to journey barefoot without speaking to others\, moving without specific steps\, and is a substance & technology free dance/ movement experience. You are invited to wear clothing that you can move & feel free in\, bring your water bottle for hydration and layers to be cozy as we come into rest at the end.\nNo previous experience with dance or Ecstatic Dance necessary.
