SUMMARY:Film Screening: Where Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:The South Shore Chapter of the Council of Canadians and South Shore Ceasefire Now will host a film screening of Where Olive Trees Weep. \nThis documentary film gives background to the current crisis and brings to light the stories of the people that the filmmakers met in their 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. It offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. It features Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. There is also footage of Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work to a group of women who were tortured in Israeli prisons. \nThe film is a call for the end to the occupation in Palestine\, equal rights and fair treatment for Palestinian people\, and the spreading of healing for all intergenerational cycles of trauma in the region. \nPlease join us Sunday\, February 9th at 2:00pm (snow date February 16th). Following the film\, there will be an opportunity to learn about the work that both organizations are doing\, hear about future plans\, explore ways to take action\, and gather with others for sharing and conversation. Light refreshments will be available. All are welcome. Admission is free\, but we welcome donations. Any money collected beyond our expenses will be sent to an aid organization\, selected by South Shore Ceasefire Now.

SUMMARY:Songs for a Winter's Night
DESCRIPTION:The Acadia University Singers present “Songs for a Winter’s Night” – a concert of seasonal music that explores different perspectives on winter. As part of the program\, the Singers and special guest cellist Connor Cornick will perform Sarah Quartel’s “Snow Angel\,” a 5-movement cycle for choir\, piano\, and cello that uses the metaphor of winter angels to celebrate the “beauty\, and the strength that a child’s voice can bring to our troubled world” (Quartel). Other selections include music by Andrew Balfour\, Jennifer Lucy Cook\, Ola Gjeilo\, Katerina Gimon\, Marie Claire Saindon\, and Robbie Smith\, plus a beautiful choral arrangement of Gordon Lightfoot’s classic\, “Song for a Winter’s Night”. With a mix of new music and seasonal favourites\, this is a program of music that will warm your heart – even if it is cold outside!\n\nDirected by Dr. Michelle Boyd\, the Acadia University Singers are a treble-voice chamber choir\, comprised of both current students and alumni. Joining them in performance are pianist Cian McCarron as well as several guest musicians from the School of Music.\n\nThis concert begins at 7:30pm in Denton Hall Auditorium. Admission is by freewill donation at the door.
