This October, the people of Lunenburg County will cast their votes for 39 municipal officials. These votes will determine the leadership and priorities of our municipalities for the next four years.

What positions do people in Chester vote for?
Chester is unique among South Shore municipalities for having residents not elect a Mayor. Instead, there are seven Councillors for different districts who elect a Warden amongst themselves.
Eligible voters will vote for one Councillor in the district they live in.

What is voter turnout like in Chester?
In the 2020 municipal election, two districts were acclaimed.
There were 3,689 votes cast among the remaining five districts.
There were 9,174 eligible voters across all seven districts when the electoral boundaries were assessed in June 2022. Each district has between 1,194 to 1,483 eligible voters.

What positions do people in MODL vote for?
Eligible voters in MODL will get to elect a Mayor, and for one Councillor for the district they live in.
Additionally, MODL has ten polling districts spanning 1,759 square kilometres from inland Nova Scotia to the ocean, surrounding the towns of Bridgewater, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. Each district is represented by one Councillor.

What is voter turnout like in MODL?
In the 2020 municipal election, The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL) saw 9,084 people turn out to vote out of approximately 20,700 eligible voters, for a total turnout of 43.9 per cent.
Out of the ten districts, three were acclaimed.

Bolivar-Getson has been serving since 2012, and was previously on Council from 1999-2003.

In the October 2020 municipal election, Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson won over one other nominee, Caleb Wheeldon. She won with 5,437 votes (60.41 per cent) over Wheeldon’s 3,563.

Whynot has offered his endorsement to Ben Brooks, a Riverport resident and business owner, who announced his intention for candidacy on April 8.
In the October 2020 municipal election, Whynot was incumbent, and won the District 9 Seat with 577 votes – 56.84 per cent of the vote. The one other nominee, Frank Fawson, had 438 votes.

In the October 2020 municipal election, she won the District 10 Seat with 442 votes – 45.94 per cent of the vote. The two other nominees were Josh Healey with 332 votes, and Ann Westhaver with 188 votes.
Veinotte is the only candidate who filed nomination papers for District 10. She will be acclaimed.

What positions do people in Bridgewater vote for?
The Town of Bridgewater elects one Mayor and six Councillors who sit at large – meaning a Councillor is not elected by people in a specific polling district, but by all voters in town.
Eligible voters will get to cast one vote for a Mayor (if there is more than one candidate), and six votes for Councillors.

What is voter turnout like in Bridgewater?
Mayor David Mitchell won by acclamation in 2020, winning his second term as Mayor after initially securing the position in 2016. He was first elected to Council in 2004.
Bridgewater has six Council seats, and only ten people ran in the 2020 municipal election.

What positions do people in Lunenburg vote for?
The Town of Lunenburg elects one Mayor and six Councillors who sit at large – meaning a Councillor is not elected by people in a specific polling district, but by all voters in town.
Eligible voters will get to cast one vote for a Mayor (if there is more than one candidate), and six votes for Councillors.

Lunenburg held a special by-election in August 2023 to replace its vacant Mayoral seat.
Lunenburg’s current Mayor, Jamie Myra, received 811 votes (68.26 per cent) over the other nominee, Gale Fullerton, with 377. Out of all eligible voters, 1,188 out of 2,021 – or 59 per cent – voted.
Voter turnout in the 2020 general election was 64.1 per cent.
Lunenburg has six Council seats, and only ten people ran in the 2020 election.

What is voter turnout like in Mahone Bay?
In the 2020 municipal election, The Town of Mahone Bay saw a total turnout of 70.3 per cent. According to Statistics Canada, the adult population of Mahone Bay in 2021 was between 910 to 950.
The six councillors who won in 2020 were all within a 130-vote margin of each other, with a gap of 195 votes between the successful nominee with the fewest votes and the one nominee who didn’t get a seat.
Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, former Lunenburg MLA and Liberal provincial cabinet minister, won a by-election for a vacant seat (vacated by Alice Burdick) in November 2022 with 68.75 per cent of 416 votes.
