Driving through Bridgewater has been uncomfortable, and not just because I’m worried my brakes will fail and I’ll careen into the LaHave. It’s because of the enormous “HP” on the mall, hanging next to the Sport Chek, written in a once-loved lightning font.

Local volunteers give back

National Volunteer Week, April 16 -22, is a time to honour those in the community who give generously of their time and expect nothing in return. To mark the occasion, we spoke to four dedicated volunteers in the region.

Spitting in class is encouraged

Imagine two-and-a-half hours on a Monday morning dedicated to knitting and felting, enjoying a leisurely cup of tea with fresh-baked cakes or cookies and the gentle instruction of the master milliner, Anna Shoub, the “Hat Junkie” of Lunenburg.

Flipping through 1938’s “World’s Best Recipes By 500 of the World’s Best Cooks”, a single line in a recipe instantly carried me back to my Aunty Marie’s kitchen in childhood. The ingredient line read: “one square of baking chocolate, melted in a half a cup of boiling water”.
